Enclothed cognition, a term coined by researchers Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky in a 2012 paper published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, describes the systematic influence that clothing has on the wearer’s own psychological processes. In other words, what you wear changes how you think, not just how you appear.
This is a meaningful distinction. Impression management is the study of how clothing shapes other people’s perceptions of you. Enclothed cognition is something different: it is about what happens inside your own head when you put something on. The effect shows up in measurable shifts in attention, abstract thinking, and performance on standardized cognitive tasks. It is not a vague boost in mood or a general sense of confidence, and it is not the same as feeling physically comfortable in what you are wearing.
Enclothed cognition also sits within a broader scientific framework called embodied cognition, which holds that the body and its physical experiences shape mental processes. Enclothed cognition is a specific instance of that larger idea, one focused entirely on clothing.
What makes enclothed cognition work, according to Adam and Galinsky, comes down to two conditions that must both be present. The Adam and Galinsky lab coat experiments
In 2012, researchers Hajo Adam and Adam Galinsky published what would become the foundational study on enclothed cognition. Their paper, released in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, did not simply ask whether clothing affects mood or confidence. It asked something far more precise: does what you wear change how your brain actually performs? To answer that, they ran three separate experiments, each one building on the last.
Experiment 1: Wearing the coat changes attention
In the first experiment, Adam and Galinsky had participants complete a Stroop-like selective attention task. This type of task measures how well your brain filters out distractions, for example, seeing the word “red” written in blue ink and correctly identifying the ink color rather than the word itself. It is a reliable, well-established measure of focused cognitive control.
Participants were split into two groups. One group wore a white lab coat during the task. The other group did not. The result was striking: those who wore the lab coat made significantly fewer errors, roughly half as many as those who wore no coat at all. With 58 participants across conditions, this was a clean, controlled finding. Putting on the coat changed how carefully and accurately people thought. The question was: why?
Experiment 2: The same coat, different meanings
Experiment 2 was where the design became especially elegant. Adam and Galinsky gave all participants the exact same white coat, physically identical in every way. The only difference was the label attached to it. Half the participants were told it was a doctor’s coat. The other half were told it was a painter’s coat.
Then both groups completed a sustained attention task. Only the group wearing the “doctor’s coat” showed improved attention performance. The “painter’s coat” group performed no better than a control group that wore no coat at all. The physical garment was constant. The cognitive outcome was not. This experiment proved that the symbolic meaning you associate with clothing is not a bonus ingredient, it is a required one. Cloth alone does nothing. Cloth plus meaning changes cognition.
Experiment 3: Wearing vs. seeing, why you have to put it on
The third experiment closed the final logical gap. If symbolic meaning matters, could you get the same cognitive benefit just by looking at a doctor’s coat? To test this, Adam and Galinsky created three conditions: one group wore a doctor’s coat, one group saw a doctor’s coat draped over a desk in front of them, and one group had no coat present at all. All three groups completed a sustained attention task measured through a visual search exercise, where participants had to spot subtle differences across images.
Only the group that physically wore the coat showed improved performance. The group that merely saw the coat sitting on the desk performed no differently than the group with no coat at all. This was the critical finding. Passive exposure to a meaningful object is not enough. You have to embody it. The act of wearing is what activates the psychological and cognitive effects.
Taken together, the three experiments isolated exactly two conditions required for enclothed cognition to occur: the physical experience of wearing the garment, and the symbolic meaning your mind attaches to it. Remove either one, and the effect disappears.
How enclothed cognition connects to embodied cognition

The 2012 Adam and Galinsky study opened a door. In the decade that followed, researchers tested formal wear, athletic clothing, uniforms, color, and costumes. The findings are uneven. Some replicate cleanly, some hold up only under specific conditions, and some have not survived scrutiny. Research reliability: what the 2023 meta-analysis actually found
Burns et al. (2023) published the most comprehensive statistical review of enclothed cognition to date, aggregating 105 effects across dozens of studies to calculate a pooled effect size. The result was a Cohen’s d of approximately 0.32, a small-to-medium effect roughly comparable to the performance difference between a placebo and a low-dose medication in many clinical drug trials. Real and measurable, but not dramatic.
What makes the meta-analysis especially valuable is what it reveals about variation. The heterogeneity across studies was high, meaning the average effect of 0.32 conceals a wide spread of results. Some clothing conditions produced much stronger cognitive shifts; others produced effects close to zero. The strength of the effect depends heavily on which type of clothing is worn, which cognitive outcome is being measured, and the context in which the clothing is encountered.
The meta-analysis also identified moderators, factors that predict when effects are stronger or weaker. Clothing associated with a specific professional role tended to produce more consistent results than clothing with weaker symbolic meaning. Attention-based tasks showed clearer effects than broader measures of creativity or confidence. This aligns with the original theory: the more specific and shared the symbolic meaning of a garment, the more it shapes cognition.
